The materials of the internet

Can you apply the concept of 'Truth to Materials'  to developing creative work on the internet?


Or are networked communications just a marketing tool?

 A talk by Dane Watkins, research assistant to Dr Misha Myers on Augmenting Impact with Social Media in collaboration with Wildworks theatre company and Falmouth University part funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund, project no. 011200NCO5


The project investigates how ‬social‭ ‬media‭ ‬can be‭ ‬employed‭ ‬effectively‭ ‬to‭ ‬understand,‭ ‬document‭ ‬and‭ ‬develop‭ ‬the‭ ‬long-term‭ ‬impact‭ ‬of‭ ‬performance‭ ‬work‭ ‬that‭ ‬takes‭ ‬place‭ ‬outside‭ ‬the‭ ‬traditional‭ ‬context‭ ‬and‭ ‬conventions‭ ‬of‭ ‬the‭ ‬theatre‭ ‬space‭?

The talk is in three parts
  1. The influence behind my own work and how four animators used the material of film to make work
  2. How I have used the materials of the internet to make work
  3. How we will collaborate with Wildworks to develop creative content with social media.

Now we are developing three practice based experiments as part of a research project funded by the European Social Fund  involving a partnership between Falmouth University and Wildworks Theatre Company:

    1 Augmenting‭ ‬performance‭ ‬through‭ ‬social‭ ‬media‭

‬In‭ ‬the‭ ‬month‭ ‬leading‭ ‬up‭ ‬to‭ ‬the‭ ‬Wildworks‭ ‬performance‭ ‬100‭ ‬Wildworks‭ ‬will‭ ‬publish‭ ‬a‭ ‬twitter‭ ‬feed‭ ‬of‭ ‬Jack‭ ‬a‭ ‬1914‭ ‬gardner.‭ ‬While‭ ‬the‭ ‬performance‭ ‬focusses‭ ‬on‭ ‬the‭ ‬impact‭ ‬of‭ ‬the‭ ‬WW1‭ ‬on‭ ‬the‭ ‬gardens‭ ‬the‭ ‬twitter‭ ‬feed‭ ‬augments‭ ‬the‭ ‬story‭ ‬by‭ ‬detailing‭ ‬the‭ ‬intimate‭ ‬tweets‭ ‬of‭ ‬one‭ ‬gardener‭’‬s‭ ‬day‭ ‬to‭ ‬day‭ ‬life‭ ‬in‭ ‬1914.

    2 Documenting‭ ‬the‭ ‬long‭ ‬tail‭ ‬of‭ ‬performance‭

‬A‭ ‬purpose‭ ‬built‭ ‬web‭ ‬app‭‭ ‬will‭ ‬archive‭ and annotate the ‬social‭ ‬media‭ ‬interactions‭ ‬of‭ ‬Cornwall‭ ‬Youth‭ ‬Theatre‭ ‬as‭ ‬part‭ ‬of‭ ‬their‭ ‬professional‭ ‬development‭ ‬during‭ ‬the‭ ‬100‭ ‬performance.

    3 Crowdsourcing‭ ‬meta‭ ‬tags‭

‬Thousands‭ ‬of‭ ‬previous‭ ‬Wildworks‭ ‬participants‭ ‬will‭ ‬be‭ ‬invited‭ ‬to‭ ‬respond‭ ‬and‭ ‬tag‭ ‬non-semantic‭ ‬archives.‭ ‬This‭ ‬experiment‭ ‬investigates‭ ‬how‭ ‬crowdsourcing‭ ‬could‭ ‬help‭ ‬Theatre‭ ‬Companies‭ ‬develop‭ ‬ongoing‭ ‬dialogue‭ ‬with‭ ‬their‭ ‬audience‭ ‬and‭ ‬meta‭ ‬tag‭ ‬archives.‭
